Hair Transplant Complications

The data shows that hair transplant procedures result in fairly few complications. According to a study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, only 27 complications arose in 533 procedures (around 5%):

ComplicationProceduresPercent of complications (n = 27)Percent in the total group (n = 533) (approximate)
Scar enlargement1140.71.90%
Folliculitis622.31.10%
Necrosis414.80.80%
Keloid27.40.40%
Pyogenic granuloma13.70.20%
Infection13.70.20%
Bleeding13.70.20%
Hiccups13.70.20%
Total271005.00%

Some takeaways from the article:
  • Scar enlargement was the main complication encountered and occurred despite the use of longer and narrower resections in the donor area (maximum, 2 cm), which resulted in a less tensile suture.
  • Folliculitis, the second most frequent complication, occurs more frequently in patients with very curly hair and in black patients.
  • Bleeding in the donor area seems to be a frequent complication but is observed less frequently in the receptor area. Very excited or hypertensive patients can experience postoperative bleeding.
  • Hiccups are common during the hair transplantation procedure, because of the patient's dorsal placement. I find this very interesting, has anyone here experienced this?
