I just thought I would add a quick update on a previous thread I had posted, sharing my negative experiences.

I previously posted how I'd had 3 FUT surgeries with Dr Peter Williams of the Ziering clinic, which have resulted in a loss of almost all transplanted grafts and having been left with neuropathic pain across my scalp and forehead.

Since my last post I have had some consultations with a neurologists and a dermatologist, the outcome of which was that the pain is (most likely) a result of Dr Williams cutting into the nerves at the back of my head while cutting out the FUT strip.

Following my previous post I was asked If I had noticeable scarring, so I have attached before and after pictures, as well as a picture of my scars.

I want to share this, as there is a lot of information on social media regarding the risks associated with going abroad for transplants and the use of non ISHRS registered surgeons. Dr Williams is a UK based surgeon who is registered with the ISHRS, so please be aware that there are still risks no matter who you use or where you go.

I appreciate it may seem odd that I had 3 procedures considering the fact that they were failing, but on each subsequent procedure I was assured that things could be put right and would be fine, which turned out not to be the case.

This post is not to put anyone off from having a transplant, I know of lots of successful procedures that have achieved great results. I'm simply sharing my experience and hopefully help prevent anyone else having to go through what I have been through.

Is the picture on the left the before picture? Why has he taken 3 separate strips above each other? I was under the impression there would still be one scar after repeat surgeries in this day and age?

I`m sorry to hear you`re still suffering.
I see you took my advice and got referred to a Neurologist. The pain you are experiencing is most likely permanent nerve damage. Did the Dermatologist do any tests to see if there is any issues with your scalp?
Did Dr Williams say why he did not remove your old strip when doing the subsequent surgeries?
Are you looking to have any type of repair work? Have you consulted with any other HT doctors?

Hi, yes the picture on the left is before I had any procedures. I'm not sure why the surgeon used separate strips. For the second procedure I thought it was going to be the same strip, for the 3rd I knew it was going to be a different one. I didn't realise it looked like this until I cropped my hair recently. My hair has grown back in a little since I cropped it so it doesn't look quite that bad now.

Hi Bigmac,

Yes I took your advice and have been to see both a neurologist and a dermatologist. I had a biopsy with the dermatologist to check for scarring alopecia, the outcome of which was all clear.

Re the pain from the nerve damage, yes that's what I was told, that it could be permanent, although over time it might get better.

Dr Williams did not comment on the scarring, it's only recently that I took that picture and realised just what it looked like. I've not had much communication with Dr Williams or Ziering recently, as I mentioned in my pervious post, I tired to complain but they weren't interested and reminded me I signed a consent form. I did send him the picture but did not receive a reply.

So it is something I want to share in a separate post but, yes, I have since had an FUE with the Hair Dr, based on a lot of research, numerous consultations and feedback / comments on this forum. It is still early days but so far things look good and I will share the results on here. Hopefully be able to share some perspective on good vs bad.

Hopefully, the suspected nerve damage eventually heals. Are you using any type of medication for it?

HI Bigmac,

yes I'm feeling quite positive about things this time round.

Yes, my GP prescribed Carbamazepine, which does help a little. I also tried a couple of creams that were prescribed but they didn't really help much.

Hi Mick.

Good to hear you have a positive feeling about this latest hair transplant. I hope it results in a positive end result for you.
I looked up Carbamazepine, I see it decreases nerve impulses which is probably why it helps a little but not enough to take the pain away completely. There are nerve block injections that may be an option. Did you speak with Dr Arshad about any possible treatments?

Yes I discussed it with him briefly, mainly just so he was aware of it, not in terms of possible treatments.

Could you not have botox for the head pain? Not sure if you can use it for this type of pain but I have a friend who gets them for head pain

If you do try this, please let us know if it works as I know patients who would benefit.
